RS1 Wins After Late-Race Contact at VIR

RS1’s Dillon Machavern and Dylan Murcott have scored their first Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge victory, albeit in controversial fashion, following contact while under yellow with the then race-leading car in Saturday’s Biscuitville Grand Prix.

Machavern took the No. 28 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR to a 2.767-second victory over the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT4.R of Robin Liddell, who led into the final hour until a bizarre incident while under the race’s second full-course caution.

Contact was made between the two cars, which resulted in Liddell’s rear bumper coming loose on the final restart with 22 minutes to go, and losing the lead to Machavern two laps later.

No penalty was given to either the Porsche or the Camaro, which had its bumper dragging for the remainder of the two-hour race.

With their win, Machavern and Murcott extend their lead in the GS championship over new second place runners Marc Miller and Till Bechtolsheimer, who soldiered home to a 7th place result following a gearbox rebuild that was completed just moments prior to the start of the race.

The pole-sitting No. 59 KohR Motorsports Ford Mustang GT4 of Dean Martin and Jack Roush Jr. completed the overall podium in third, despite late-race side-to-side contact between Liddell and Martin that sent the Mustang off-course.

Roush Jr. led the opening stages prior to pitting while under the first yellow at the halfway mark, which gave the top spot to Liddell, who benefitted by pitting under green just prior to the caution.

CRG-I-Do Borrow, meanwhile, broke through for its first class victory of the season in ST, with Owen Trinkler and Sarah Cattaneo taking top honors in their Nissan Altima.

The win came after taking front tires only during their pit stop, which saw the pink-colored Nissan jump from third to second in class and Trinkler getting around the No. 84 BimmerWorld BMW 328i of James Clay soon after the restart.

It marked the pairing’s first class victory since Canadian Tire Motorsport Park last year.

Clay and class pole-sitter Tyler Cooke came home second in class, ahead of the No. 75 C360R Audi S3 of Pierre Klienubing and Roy Block, which started second-to-last on the grid to record a podium finish in third.
