Ozz Negri topped the time sheets in opening practice for Saturday’s Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda, a session which saw a heavy, weekend-ending crash for one of the Prototype Challenge contenders.

The No. 38 Performance Tech Oreca FLM09 of Conor Daly slammed into the Turn 1 wall to bring out a red flag early in the 60-minute session. While Daly escaped serious injury, the car sustained extensive damage that cannot be repaired this weekend.

Daly’s accident was one of three incidents in the session, all for PC cars, with Anthony Lazzaro (CORE autosport) and Mirco Schultis (Starworks Motorsport) also bringing out red flags, but with no considerable damage to either car.

Negri’s 1:15.163 lap was 0.464 seconds quicker than the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Riley-Ford DP of Scott Pruett, with Katherine Legge putting the DeltaWing third overall on the time sheets, and less than six-tenths behind.

Colin Braun led the way in Prototype Challenge, reeling off a 1:15.976 in his CORE autosport Oreca FLM09.

GT Le Mans was topped by Dirk Werner in the No. 25 BMW Team RLL BMW Z4 GTE, while Spencer Pumpelly was quickest in GT Daytona in his No. 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche 911 GT America.

Practice 2 gets underway at 3:25 p.m. ET.
