James Hinchcliffe turned his first laps at the wheel of a GT3 car on Tuesday, having tested one of Kellymoss with Riley’s Porsche 911 GT3 R entries at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The former NTT IndyCar Series star joined Kay van Berlo and other drivers in the private test at The Brickyard, in which the team was utilizing for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s race return in September.

“Fenders are fun,” the Canadian wrote in a post on Twitter. “Had a blast IMS in something totally new for me. Huge thanks to Kellymoss for the chance to turn some laps in their GTD car. I could get used to this.”

Hinchcliffe, who currently serves as a broadcaster for NBC Sports’ coverage of the NTT IndyCar Series, is understood to have been pursuing possible drives in the WeatherTech Championship paddock to build on his sports car racing resume.

He holds previous sports car starts largely in Mazda machinery, including SpeedSource’s RX-8 prior to outings in the Rolex 24 at Daytona with the Lola-Mazda LMP2 car and Mazda RT24-P DPi entry.

While having stepped down from full-time IndyCar competition at the end of 2021, the 36-year-old is known to have held discussions with at least one current GTD Pro team in recent years.

As previously revealed by Sportscar365, Kellymoss with Riley is planning to expand into the GTD Pro ranks next year with a third Porsche entry.

Kellymoss, along with several other teams, were utilizing a private testing opportunity early this week instead of participating in IMSA’s official sanctioned two-day test at the track, which kicks off on Friday.
