Porsche Reveals Penske Heritage Road America Liveries

Porsche Penske Motorsport will celebrate two iconic sports car racing eras in this weekend’s Motul SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix at Road America, with a pair of heritage liveries on its Porsche 963s.

Unveiled on Tuesday, the No. 6 Porsche, driven by Kevin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor, will carry the famous Sunoco design from the 1973 Porsche 917/30, while Felipe Nasr and Julien Andlauer’s No. 7 GTP entry will sport the DHL colors from the Penske Porsche RS Spyders in the 2000s.

It comes as Porsche Motorsport continues its 75th anniversary, while Team Penske has been commemorating 60 years in motorsport with heritage liveries on its cars in NASCAR and IndyCar, and now also in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Entered by Roger Penske Enterprises, the Porsche 917/30 of Mark Donohue dominated the 1973 Can-Am season, winning six of the eight races, including the 200-mile contest at Road America that year, where Donohue became the first driver to break the two-minute lap barrier in qualifying.

The No. 7 Porsche, meanwhile, features the livery that Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas took to overall victory in the 2007 American Le Mans Series round at the Wisconsin circuit, en route to their first of two consecutive LMP2 championships, and a hat-trick for the team.

“Road America has been the scene of special successes in the shared history of Porsche and Penske,” said Porsche Motorsport boss Thomas Laudenbach.

“In 1973, the Porsche 917/30 dominated the scene. During qualifying, Mark Donohue became the first driver on this track to break the two-minute lap time barrier. Starting in 2006, the RS Spyder marked Porsche’s return to prototype racing across several championships.

“I personally remember the success of 2007: I was there when Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas drove to overall victory against the nominally more powerful LMP1 race cars.”
