Formal, Doyle to ‘Have Fun Final Races’ After Clinching Title Early

Danny Formal said he and co-driver Graham Doyle “get to have fun for three races” after having clinched the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Pro-Am championship early.

The Wayne Taylor Racing duo claimed their eighth class win in nine races in Saturday’s opening round of the weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in another controlling run that saw Formal and Doyle finish fourth overall.

Now with an insurmountable points lead over their nearest competitors, Formal said the pressure has been lifted for the remaining races of the season, including Sunday’s final outing with the V10-powered Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 on U.S. soil.

The final two races of the campaign will be contested next month in Monza, site of the Lamborghini World Finals, ahead of the highly anticipated rollout of the new Lamborghini Temerario Super Trofeo next year.

“Eight wins out of nine races, my [fourth] championship in six years with the team, it’s just unbelievable,” said Formal. “We’re the Pro-Am champions after winning a Pro championship last year and a World Final.

“And Graham comes back from winning an Am championship to winning a Pro-Am championship.

“I’m just so grateful for the team. We locked it up early so now we get to have fun for three races, one [today] and two in Monza.

“We’re going to probably try different things to see what we can achieve with the race car now that we literally have no pressure, and go have som fun.

“We’ll now trying to go help our teammates in the No. 1 car.”

While Formal has cemented himself as the most successful driver in Super Trofeo North America history, tying Corey Lewis with four championships but extending his record in all-time series wins, Doyle has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the series, securing his second class title in as many years.

The 20-year-old, has risen from LB Cup to winning the Am title last year and now becoming a Pro-Am champion.

“It’s pretty unbelievable to have eight wins out of nine races and a championship done with three races to go,” said Doyle.

“I can’t thank Danny enough. He’s the driving force behind the car and the team this year, so it’s just been unbelievable working with him.

“It was a fun race today. Danny gave me the car in the lead, which was great.

“We had no screen, no ABS, for the last five laps. That made it interesting to finish the race. It definitely made me work for it but that’s what makes it fun.

“I’m just so thankful for everybody at the team, from Travis [Houge], down. They’ve just crushed it this entire year and it’s really showed throughout the entire program.”

Formal and Doyle are the first drivers to have locked up Super Trofeo North America titles this year out out of the four classes in the IMSA-sanctioned single-make series.

TR3 Racing’s Elias De La Torre holds a chance of securing the Pro championship in Sunday’s final round of the weekend at The Brickyard.
