Danny Formal and Hampus Ericsson claimed victory in the opening round of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America season at Sebring International Raceway, leading a multi-class-winning day for Wayne Taylor Racing.
After a strong first stint for Formal, Ericsson inherited the lead his co-driver had grown prior to the mandatory pit window opening immediately following a full-course caution period for a multi-car collision earlier in the race.
The No. 1 WTR Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 led from flag to flag, finsihing 10.731 seconds up on runners-up TR3’s Elias De La Torre and Will Bamber.
Jaden Conwright and Scott Huffaker drove their No. 22 World Speed entry to the final podium position ahead of WTR’s Nick Persing in fourth and the No. 4 ANSA Motorsports entry in fifth.
Anthony McIntosh and Brendon Leitch took the Pro-Am win for WTR after inheriting the lead after a spin for Tyler Hoffman on cold tires after teammate Luke Berkeley got the No. 28 Alliance Racing Lamborghini to the head of the field in the opening stages.
Graham Doyle and Glenn McGee delivered WTR another class victory by winning in Am, comfortably ahead of the solo-driven No. 48 Precision Performance Motorsports entry of David Staab.
Nick Groat took the LB Cup class win for One Motorsports with Mark Brummond’s Forty7 Motorsports machine behind.
A yellow came out after a three-car incident in the opening stages of the race, resulting in cosmetic damage to the No. 99 RAFA Racing LB Cup class machine and race-ending damage to Adrian Kunzle’s MLT Motorsports entry and Clay Wilson’s No. 37 TR3 Lamborghini.
Kunzle was handed a five-second penalty to be served during his pit stop for incident responsibility but pulled behind the wall before he was able to take to pit lane. Wilson also attempted to continue to pit lane in his stricken TR3 machine, but eventually ground to a halt at Turn 15, requiring recovery.
Just before the collision, Mateo Siderman pulled his No. 63 TR3 machine behind the Turn 13 wall to retire as the field fell under caution.
The timing of the caution period delayed the opening of the race’s mandatory pit stop window, with the race resuming and 10-minute pit window opening with just over half an hour to go.
Noteably, Andy Lee and Slade Stewart’s No. 14 Flying Lizard Motorsport Lamborghini did not start the race due to crash damage sustained during qualifying, despite Lee earning the second spot on the Pro-Am grid for Race 1.
The No. 25 Alliance Racing machine of David Hodge also failed to start Race 1 after not setting a lap time in this morning’s qualifying session.
Race 2 goes green Friday at 5:05 p.m. EST, with live streaming coverage available on IMSA’s YouTube channel and Peacock.
