Nick Persing won an action-packed opening Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America race of the weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for Wayne Taylor Racing.
Persing made the decisive move for the overall lead and eventual win in the closing stages aboard his solo-driven Pro class No. 8 Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2, overtaking Elias De La Torre, who later suffered a spin and then contact with the Turn 6 tire wall in his No. 29 TR3 Racing Lamborghini.
The accident froze the order in the final minutes, leaving Persing to take the checkered flag under caution over RAFA Racing’s Cameron Lawrence and Werner Neugebauer, who were elevated to second after De La Torrre’s accident.
WTR’s Danny Formal and Hampus Ericsson looked set for a controlling win before the Pro points-leading car suddenly lost pace in the final ten minutes of the 50-minute contest, tumbling down the order and handing the overall lead to De La Torre, with Persing close behind.
Scott Huffaker was classified third after a post-race time penalty for Colin Queen and Enzo Geraci, which relegated the ANSA Motorsports duo to fifth.
Meanwhile, Al Morey and Keawn Tandon came home in fourth for Forty7 Motorsports.
Andy Lee and Slade Stewart battled their way to the front of the Pro-Am field to take the class win in the No. 14 Flying Lizard Motorsports entry. The pair made up ten positions on their way to victory lane in what is their first race of the season, following issues which prevented them from starting either race at Sebring in March.
David Staab took control of the Am class lead after early contact and a penalty for class pole-sitter Graham Doyle. Staab maintained his advantage after his pit stop to take Am win for Precision Performance Motorsports.
Nick Groat came out on top in LB Cup after running nose-to-tail with MLT Motorsports’ Adrian Kunzle for the majority of the race.
The field fell under its first of two cautions after the opening laps when Seth Henry’s Kaizen Autosport Lamborghini became lodged in the Turn 4 gravel trap with rear left suspension damage following contact with Doyle, for which the WTR driver was issued with a 10-second post-race penalty.
During the yellow, the No. 47 of Precision Performance Motorsports entry of Bryan Ortiz took to pit lane to repair right side bodywork damage just as Andre Lagartixa pulled his No. 25 Alliance Racing Lamborghini off track at Turn 11.
In the second half of the race, the Alliance Racing’s No. 28 Lamborghini and PPM’s No. 46 entry both went behind the wall and retired.
Race 2 of the Super Trofeo weekend takes the green flag at 9:35 a.m. PST with live coverage on Peacock as well as IMSA and Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s YouTube channels.
