Maurizio Leschiutta has been named Lamborghini’s new Head of Motorsport, filling the space vacated by Giorgio Sanna in 2024.
The ex-BMW M Motorsport LMDh project leader, who has more than 30 years of motorsports experience, will report directly to Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer Rouven Mohr, who had been the interim motorsport boss since last March.
While understood to have been in his position since Dec. 1, Leschiutta’s first official event with the Italian manufacturer will be next weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, where Lamborghinis will be entered in three of the four IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship classes, including the GTP ranks with its SC63.
Prior to his arrival at Lamborghini, Leschiutta spent 11 years in Formula 1, specializing in engine development before moving to GT racing and his most recent role with BMW.
“It is with great pleasure that I am able to join Lamborghini Squadra Corse,” said Leschiutta. “For me, it is an important milestone in becoming a part of such an established and respected name and organization.
“I hope I can contribute to writing a small paragraph in one of the many pages of its history books, and I am confident that, together, we shall rise to the challenges in the years to come.”
Leschiutta’s role will include the continued development of the Lamborghini SC63 LMDh car and the GT3 customer racing portfolio, with the new Temerario GT3 set to conduct its first on-track testing program in the coming weeks.
He will also be responsible for the three continental Lamborghini Super Trofeo single-make series.
“We are delighted to welcome Maurizio Leschiutta to the Lamborghini family heading into the new season,” said Mohr. “Maurizio is someone who has an incredible wealth of expertise and knowledge in motorsport, and, with his vision, we hope to achieve even more success across the Lamborghini Squadra Corse portfolio.
“Next season is for sure very exciting for Lamborghini, with the launch of the new Temerario GT3 car in the summer and the continuation of our LMDh project in the GTP class of IMSA and of course the highly successful Lamborghini Super Trofeo regional series.”
