CN cars will now be eligible through the 2017 season, organizers from the Asian Le Mans Series announced Thursday.

The entry-level prototypes, which compete in various European national championships, were originally committed to a two-year program as part of a phase-in of the ACO’s new LMP3 category.

However, it’s believed there could be delays in launching the new LMP3 platform, originally announced for 2015 for both the European and Asian Le Mans Series.

The reason for the extending the CN’s eligibility in Asia is to “help support the business model for the CN class and open up the category to more teams offering an affordable entry-level prototype class,” according to a statement from the series.

Close to a dozen CN cars have already been approved for competition, including the Ligier JS 53 Evo, Norma M20 FC, Lobart LA01, Pescarolo 02, Promec PJ199, Tatuus PY 012, Wolf GB08 and Zulltec CZ2.

All cars must run Honda’s two-liter four-cylinder turbo engine.

The five-round championship kicks off at a yet-to-be confirmed venue in Korea on July 20.
