Jason Daskalos held off a charging Johnny O’Connell to sweep the weekend and extend his points lead in GT America powered by AWS at Barber Motorsports Park, while Isaac Sherman was crowned champion in the GT4 class.
Daskalos, piloting the No. 27 CRP Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, finished 0.613 seconds ahead of O’Connell’s No. 3 SKI Autosports Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II.
That came after O’Connell closed rapidly in the final ten minutes of the race, having been freed of both Kyle Washington and Justin Rothberg.
O’Connell ran behind both drivers prior to the second safety car restart of the race, which had been called after the No. 102 TPC Racing McLaren Artura GT4 of Alan Grossberg found the gravel at Turn 9.
Five minutes after the restart, Rothberg saw a podium run fall apart when his No. 29 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 suffered a right front puncture, leaving him crawling to the pits.
O’Connell then fought his way past Washington’s No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R at Turn 5 and set off in pursuit of Daskalos in the final 12 minutes of the race.
However, while the four-time 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner closed to within a second of Daskalos, he was unable to prevent the Mercedes-AMG driver from taking his second win of the weekend.
As a result, Daskalos extends his points tally to 241 with two races remaining, holding an 18-point advantage over O’Connell.
Washington initially completed the podium but was assessed a post-race time penalty equivalent to a drive-through for his contact with the No. 2 Flying Lizard Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo of Jason Bell, who inherited third in the end.
Rothberg ended the race in ninth overall and fifth in class, while Ross Chouest and Tim Savage failed to finish after a clash at Turn 5 in the opening stages of the race.
Sherman Captures GT4 Title With Dominant Win
In the GT4 class, Rotek Racing driver Isaac Sherman cruised to his eleventh victory of the season and secured the championship with two races to spare.
The No. 098 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport started from pole position with Sherman going on to win by 4.550 seconds over ACI Motorsports’ Curt Swearingin.
With his championship win, Sherman succeeds current SRO3 driver Bell, who took the title last year with Flying Lizard.
Gray Newell completed the GT4 podium aboard the No. 25 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage GT4, with Nicholas Shanny and Todd Parriott rounding out the top five in class.
