A late-race move by Kevin Boehm on Tyler Gonzalez put Random Vandals Racing back into victory lane in Sunday’s mixed-condition Pirelli GT4 America race at Sonoma Raceway.
It gave the Paul Sparta-led Random Vandals team a double victory on Sunday.
Boehm muscled his No. 97 BMW M4 GT4 Evo around the No. 68 RAFA Racing Team Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 of Gresham Wagner with five minutes to go to take the lead and eventual overall win by 6.241 seconds over Wagner and co-driver Tyler Gonzalez.
It came in a 60-minute contest that started in full wet conditions before drying out, yet all cars remained on wet-weather Pirelli tires throughout.
While starting second, Gonzalez took the lead on Lap 10, capitalizing on an off-course excursion by Parker Thompson in the No. 69 JTR Race Engineering Toyota that dropped the Toyota-contracted driver to third.
An accident by Charlie Postins in the No. 36 BimmerWorld Racing BMW, triggered by contact from the No. 28 Fast Track Racing BMW of Stu McAleer, resulted in the race’s only full-course caution.
With the majority of drivers electing to make their mandatory pit stops under yellow, it set up for a 20-minute shootout to the finish.
Sam Craven and Josh Green gave Random Vandals top Pro-Am class honors as well with a third place overall finish in their No. 94 BMW.
Craven got around the No. 69 JTR Toyota of Anthony McIntosh on the restart, with McIntosh fading with multiple issues late in the running.
The No. 4 JMF Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage GT4 Evo of Mike David Ortmann and Braydon Arthur was fourth overall and third in the Silver class, ahead of the Alex Ellis and Danny Dyszelski-driven VPX Motorsport Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, which completed the overall top-five.
Am class honors ultimately went to the No. 07 Skip Barber Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT4 of Michael and Alex Garcia after the No. 72 RAFA Racing Toyota of Anthony Geraci and Kenny Schmied was assessed a 40-second post-race time penalty for cutting the track.
Initially, the stewards gave the Toyota a 30-second penalty, which was enough to hold on to the win but it was later amended in a bulletin.
The race saw a number of spins early on, including a race-ending accident for the No. 9 ACI Porsche of Loek Hartog, while Tony Gaples spun his No. 33 Blackdog Racing McLaren Artura GT4 in the same corner some 30 minutes later.
RESULTS: Race 2
This story was updated at 5:27 p.m. PST to reflect an ammended penalty for the No. 72 RAFA Racing Toyota, which has now finished second in class.
