Nicholas Shanny and Terry Borcheller have claimed a surprise overall victory in Sunday’s Pirelli GT4 America race at Sonoma Raceway, which ended under yellow.

The No. 20 Carrus Callas Raceteam Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO took the outright win following a well-timed pit stop that put the Am class entry out front of the competition prior to a race-ending full course caution with 15 minutes to go.

While the No. 999 Hanley Motorsports Toyota crossed the line in first, it was assessed a post-race time penalty for not fulfilling the pit stop requirements.

It is believed to have marked the first time an Am category car has won outright in GT4 America competition.

The No. 47 Nolasport Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport of Jason Hart led the majority of the 60-minute race until the series of yellows that essentially delayed the opening of the pit window.

Hart’s co-driver Matt Travis, who climbed into Saturday’s race-winning car with less than 20 minutes left on the clock, was provisionally classified fifth overall at the checkered flag.

Pro-Am class honors went to the No. 50 Chouest Povoledo Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT4 of Ross Chouest and Aaron Povoledo, while the No. 34 Conquest/JMF Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4 of Michaei Stevens and Jesse Webb picked up the Silver class win.

Nolasport’s closest competitor in the early stages of the race, the No. 7 ACI Motorsports Porsche of Kay van Berlo, dropped down the running after stopping on track near the start/finish line, which brought out the race’s first of three cautions with 37 minutes to go.

It saw Hart’s 14-second lead at that time eliminated, with the No. 34 Conquest/JMF Mercedes of Stevens closely in tow.

The race’s second yellow, for an accident for the No. 68 Smooge Racing Toyota of John Geesbreght and a separate multi-car pileup involving Kenton Koch’s Random Vandals BMW M4 GT4, saw the pit window close less than one minute after it opened.

It led to confusion from several competitors, including the No. 999 Toyota of Parker Thompson, which had pitted just as the caution came out.

The No. 37 Skip Barber Racing School Toyota has been provisionally classified third overall and second in Pro-Am, with the debuting Nissan Z GT4 from TechSport Racing completing the podium in third.
