GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing’s Jon Fogarty is “absolutely gutted” following a heavy race-ending accident between he and the No. 93 RealTime Racing Acura NSX GT3 of Peter Kox in Sunday’s Pirelli World Challenge Race 2 at Road America.
Fogarty’s No. 99 Porsche 911 GT3 R and the Acura of Kox made contact heading into Turn 5 early in the 50-minute race, sending the two cars hard into the wall, and others forced to take evasive action in avoidance of the wreckage.
While both drivers escaped injury, the race was red-flagged for barrier repair and track cleanup.
Fogarty, who refrained from commenting on the cause of the accident until reviewing race and on-board footage, said he’s “pretty sure” the Red Dragon is a write-off.
“Obviously, a lot of emotions go through your mind after an incident like that, but the top one is frustration,” Fogarty said.
“I was in the process of passing two guys and somehow it all went sideways. Unfortunately, the car is badly destroyed. I am OK and I am so grateful for that. Porsche builds safe cars.
“Not much I can say other than I am extremely disappointed in this weekend, especially in light of the fact that we had such a good race car.”
Wright Motorsports’ Patrick Long ended up winning the race, once it resumed with less than 20 minutes left in the time-specific race.
There is a five-week break until the next PWC round at Mid-Ohio on July 28-30, which could help both GAINSCO/BSR and RealTime in the extensive repairs needed to their GT3 machinery.
