R. Ferri Motorsport has confirmed a return to Pirelli World Challenge competition after a one-year absence, naming Alex Riberas as driver of its brand-new Ferrari 488 GT3 car.
The Spaniard, a standout in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship last year with Alex Job Racing, will make his PWC debut in next weekend’s season-opener on the streets of St. Pete.
While having been known for his success in Porsche machinery, Riberas has prior Ferrari experience, having come off a runner-up finish in the 2016-17 Asian Le Mans Series with the Ferrari-backed DH Racing squad.
“This is a new challenge for me and I know the car very well,” Riberas said. “I’m happy to be racing for R.Ferri Motorsport and together I feel we can have a successful year.”
The Toronto-based squad returns to PWC competition after a 2nd place finish in the 2015 championship with Olivier Beretta, who delivered three wins and seven podium finishes.
It came, however, in a contentious season that had Beretta in the spotlight due to a number of incidents.
“We are excited to be back this year in the Pirelli World Challenge with a driver that has had a lot of success with the Ferrari,” team boss Remo Ferri said.
“With the support from the factory coupled with the experience we gained from previous years, I feel confident that we can be a very strong team. Similar to our last season in PWC, I feel that we can again compete for the championship but this time come out as overall champions.”
