Lappalainen Takes Zandvoort Race 2 Pole in Emil Frey Ferrari

The Emil Frey Racing Ferrari squad enjoyed a strong qualifying session for the second race of the GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Sprint Cup weekend at Zandvoort as Konsta Lappalainen grabbed pole.

The Finn posted a 1:33.192 aboard the No. 14 Ferrari 296 GT3 Evo to secure the team’s first pole of the season and go over half a second quicker than Saturday’s pole time.

Lappalainen was two tenths faster than Race 1 winner Louis Prette aboard the No. 58 Garage 59 McLaren 720S GT3 Evo with that car taking a second consecutive Gold Cup pole.

Ben Green added further joy for the Emil Frey team as he qualified third in the No. 69 Ferrari that completed the podium in race one, the Briton posting a 1:33.435.

Fourth fastest was Max Hesse in the No. 46 WRT BMW M4 GT3 EVO while the top-five was completed by another Ferrari, this time the No. 51 Gold Cup AF Corse machine of class points leader Matias Zagazeta.

Sixth fastest was the No. 80 Lionspeed GP Porsche 911 GT3 R Evo of Ricardo Feller, that crew having missed out on taking the points lead on Saturday after a penalty for Bastian Buus unbuckling his seat belts too early dropped it from fifth to 23rd.

But it was a tough qualifying session for the top two cars in the overall points table.

Chris Lulham in the No. 3 Verstappen Racing 2 Seas Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo that Dani Juncadella moved into the points lead was only 15th.

Meanwhile, the horrible weekend for pre-event table-toppers Kelvin van der Linde and Charles Weerts aboard the No. 32 WRT BMW continued as van der Linde was only 22nd.

But he will actually start down in 27th after a five-place grid penalty for contact overhanging from the previous Magny-Cours event.

The No. 21 Comtoyou Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo scored a second Silver Cup pole of the season courtesy of Oliver Soderstrom, who was 19th overall, while class pacesetter Ignacio Montenegro in the No. 30 WRT BMW was only fifth.

It was the No. 222 2 Seas Mercedes-AMG of Charles Dawson that set the Bronze Cup pace, two tenths faster than Peter Dempsey in the No. 93 Ziggo Sport Tempesta Racing Porsche that triumphed in Saturday’s opening contest.

The second race of the Zandvoort weekend is due to take place at 2:15 p.m. CEST (8:15 a.m. EST).
