Repco Australian Supercars star Chaz Mostert said he “jumped at” the opportunity to make his debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with SunEnergy1 Racing in this weekend’s Battle on the Bricks.

Mostert has joined Jordan Love and team owner/driver Kenny Habul to form an all-Australian lineup in the GTD Pro class No. 75 Mercedes-AMG GT3 for Sunday’s six-hour IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship round.

The race marks Mostert’s first WeatherTech Championship start since winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona in the GTLM class at the wheel of a Team RLL-run BMW M8 GTE in 2020 and is his first time back in a GT3-spec Mercedes-AMG since taking Pro-Am class honors in last year’s CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa with Habul’s team.

“It’s my first time at Indy,” Mostert told Sportscar365. “I’ve done Daytona a couple of times now and when this opportunity came up with Kenny to come to Indy, I jumped at it.

“To come here and check out this facility is awesome and to be on the sports car track is pretty cool too.

“I always love racing in IMSA; it’s a lot of fun. It’s like NASCAR for sports cars.”

Mostert, who sits second in the Supercars championship, currently leads the Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia points standings, having been part of Arise Racing GT’s new Ferrari 296 GT3 effort.

“I’ve been doing a bit of stuff in a Ferrari 296 that has been keeping me a bit sharp in GTs but they’re definitely different cars,” he said.

“At least I felt like when I got back in the Mercedes-AMG this weekend, it wasn’t foreign to me.

“After doing so many laps at Spa… It’s a nicely balanced car and a nice stable car. Hopefully we’re there or thereabouts throughout the weekend.”

While having gotten off to a challenging start with a fuel-related issue resulting in no track time in Friday’s sole practice session, Mostert, Love and Habul turned laps in the second session on Saturday morning, setting them up for qualifying and Sunday’s enduro.

Mostert said: “I think we need to tune our car up a little bit and make it a bit better balance. But it’s my first time on this Michelin, which is a little bit unique, which some of the guys are saying.

“We’ll have to see where we are. I don’t think we had the smoothest practice or have been able to show too much speed, but no doubt every run for me and Jordan in the car, we’ll get better and better.

“Hopefully we’ll be somewhere in the mix by the end of the six [hours].”

With Indy now checked off his bucket list, Mostert has targeted two other iconic sports car circuits that he’d like to one day tackle.

“I love racing sports cars,” he said. “I’m not an oval type of guy but to come to these awesome endurance races is cool.

“There’s still a couple on my list. I’d love to do Le Mans one day and Suzuka. But I’m just lucky to be able to do what I’ve done so far.”

While the 2025 Supercars calendar has yet to be released, Intercontinental GT Challenge, the series SunEnergy1 typically contests, will return to Suzuka for a 1000km race next September.

“I need to check my dates but I’ll definitely chuck my hat in the ring and see if Kenny will let me drive,” said Mostert. “But first I’ve got to do a good enough job this weekend.”
