An early race pit stop to slick tires paid dividends for Nelson Piquet Jr., who took victory in the opening Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America race of the weekend at NOLA Motorsports Park.

The ANSA Motorsports driver took his No. 30 Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 to the win over the No. 27 Dream Racing entry of Edoardo Liberati in a mixed condition 50-minute race that ended under a full course caution.

With the 30-car field starting on wet-weather Pirelli tires, Piquet Jr. was the first to switch to slicks on Lap 3, initially dropping behind but recovering by the round of mandatory stops once the pit window opened.

The Brazilian came under pressure from the No. 88 Taurino Racing by D Motorsport entry of Loris Spinelli, who made up nearly 20 seconds in the matter of a few laps but came in for a third pit stop with 14 minutes to go.

Billy Johnson, who was running third at the time in the No. 71 TPC Racing Lamborghini, also visited pit lane for a third time in the race.

It marked Piquet Jr.’s first win in Super Trofeo competition.

The No. 50 O’Gara Motorsport/Change Racing/USRT entry of Edoardo Piscopo and Patrick Kujala completed the overall and Pro class podium in third.

Spinelli finished fourth, ahead of the pole-sitting No. 1 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini of Kyle Marcelli and Danny Formal, which completed the top-five.

Pro-Am class honors went to the No. 46 Precision Performance Motorsports Lamborghini of Bryson Lew and John Dubets, thanks to Dubet’s late-race move on the No. 25 WTR entry of Tom Long.

Long and co-driver Ashton Harrison finished second in class.

Caleb Bacon and AJ Muss picked up the Am class win in the No. 7 Forty7 Motorsports entry while Flying Lizard Motorsports’ Slade Stewart claimed victory in LB Cup.

The second and final race of the weekend is scheduled to get underway on Sunday at 9:45 a.m. CT with live coverage on Peacock and IMSA.tv.
