Ford Racing has announced that it will host the Mustang Challenge Spa Invitational next year, supporting the 24 Hours of Spa.
The event, scheduled for June 25-28, 2027 will mark the American manufacturer’s second-ever festival style non-points round featuring the Ford Mustang Dark Horse R after the inaugural Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational last year that attracted nearly 40 cars.
Since then, Ford has launched the Mustang Cup Australia and is now in the second and third seasons of Mustang Challenge North America and Mustang Cup USA, respectively.
“The Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational was a great success, with over three-dozen Mustang Dark Horse R race cars competing at the Circuit de la Sarthe,” said Ford Racing global customer racing manager Chris Ward.
“After seeing the reaction to Mustang Challenge going international, we knew we should continue on the path of making Mustang One-Make a global platform.
“There are many great options, but the 24 Hours of Spa seemed the natural follow-up event to Le Mans.”
Ward said they anticipate to have entries from all three of its current single-make series, along with one-offs, as was the case at Le Mans.
“We expect to see competitors from not only Mustang Challenge North America, but also Mustang Cup USA and Mustang Cup Australia all racing against one another in this special event,” he said.
“This will truly show off the impressive talents we have in each of our three series as well as spotlight the Mustang Dark Horse R.
“The 2027 Mustang Challenge Spa Invitational will be a true international blend that can only be brought to you by America’s Race Team.”
While further details on the event will be released at a later date, the Spa Invitational will almost certainly result in adjusted calendars for all three series next year.
Mustang Challenge North America is competing this weekend at Watkins Glen International, while Mustang Cup USA was just in action one week ago at Virginia International Raceway, and Mustang Cup Australia most recently ran at Queensland Raceway two weeks ago.
As was the case with the Le Mans Invitational, it’s understood that a large enough gap will be provided for teams and equipment to make the trip to Belgium and return to their domestic single-make series.
