The winners of next year’s Silverstone FIA World Endurance Championship round will be presented with the Royal Automobile Club’s prestigious Tourist Trophy, one of the oldest prizes in world motorsport.
It was confirmed during the ACO press conference at the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier this month that Silverstone will return to the WEC schedule next year for the first time since 2019 with an event planned for April 23-25.
It has now been revealed that the Tourist Trophy, which was first awarded back in 1905 for a road race on the Isle of Man, will be handed to the Silverstone event’s winners.
A glittering cast of motorsport stars have previously won the trophy, including Stirling Moss, Graham Hill and Mike Hawthorn, while sports car racing legends Derek Bell and Tom Kristensen have also been recipients.
The trophy was presented on seven of the last eight occasions that the WEC visited Silverstone but in recent years has instead been awarded to a historic race held at the Silverstone Festival retro event.
“We are thrilled that the winners of next season’s 6 Hours of Silverstone will be presented with the Tourist Trophy,” said WEC CEO Frederic Lequien.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Royal Automobile Club for its generosity in offering such a prestigious prize, which has previously been awarded to some of the sport’s most elite performers.
“The qualities traditionally required to win the Tourist Trophy are the very same as those required to excel at the highest levels of endurance racing, so we have no doubt that whoever receives this coveted accolade on the podium at Silverstone next spring will be thoroughly deserving of it.”
RAC chairman Duncan Wiltshire added: “We are delighted that the Trophy will be awarded at Silverstone as the FIA World Endurance Championship makes a very welcome return to the United Kingdom.
“With the championship enjoying unprecedented global growth and attracting the world’s leading manufacturers, there could be no more fitting stage on which to continue the Tourist Trophy’s remarkable legacy.”
