In the wake of Saturday’s season-opening Nissan Grand Prix of Texas, Pirelli World Challenge officials are re-evaluating certain GTA driver classifications in advance of Sunday’s second race at Circuit of The Americas.
The No. 41 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R of Michael Lewis claimed top GTA class honors on Saturday, with a fifth place overall finish, followed by DragonSpeed’s Frankie Montecalvo and Risi Competizione driver Ricardo Perez in 7th and 8th overall, respectively.
PWC rules state that a driver who achieves an overall podium finish or two fourth/fifth place finishes will automatically be moved up to the GT class. However, all on-track driver performance is also evaluated during each event and can be used to determine driver classification.
When reached by Sportscar365, a series representative said the results from Race 1 are still being reviewed. It includes a detailed data matrix for all drivers.
Multiple sources confirmed to Sportscar365 late Saturday that drivers were poised to be upgraded but no formal decision has been made. A final ruling is expected by tomorrow afternoon.
