Jenson Altzman is targeting a switch to Pirelli GT4 America competition, potentially with McCumbee McAleer Racing, as the Ford Racing Junior Team driver looks to help usher in Mustang GT4 customers into SRO America competition next year.
The 23-year-old Californian, who finished fourth in the Michelin Pilot Challenge GS class championship after being a title contender down to the season-ending race, revealed that a return to the IMSA-sanctioned series is “not currently in the cards.”
“I’ve got a couple of opportunities, maybe with some other programs, maybe going to run with MMR in GT4 America,” Altzman told Sportscar365. “There’s still maybe some things [also] in Australia. We’ll have to see.”
While already confirmed for a five-race program with the Ford Mustang GT3 EVO in the Michelin Endurance Cup rounds of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with Myers Riley Motorsports, Altzman said he’s looking to add onto that program and indicated he could even contest the Monochrome GT4 Australia series.
“I’d love to be doing more than five races next year, if possible,” he said. “I’m working hard for sure.”
When asked about the prospects of GT4 America, which did not see any Ford Mustang GT4s in action this past season, Altzman said he feels there’s a strong potential in SRO America.
Sportscar365 understands that both TechSport and MMR are looking to field cars in the series next year.
“I think we needed a couple of Mustang GT4 cars running in that series,” said Altzman. “If we can come over, bring a lot of our experience.
“We’re a front-running team in IMSA and have obviously gotten the car figured out pretty well towards the end of the year.
“If we can go over there, I think we cannot only help Ford but help some of the other customer teams that are looking to come and run too.”
Altzman said he also has options to return to Australia after making a one-off appearance at The Bend Motorsports Park earlier this year.
“There’s a few people that want me to come back, which that alone, is kind of awesome,” he said.
“I’ve been able to start to learn what I learned there, on the tire, to come back to the sim and be able to work in and dig a little bit more into the tire model there, so we know that’s running well for other customer teams.
“Just being able to run it in a different setup window, learn a little bit more about the car and what it’s capable of, trying to attack different problems that we have over in Pilot Challenge.
“There were seven or eight there that weekend, so it was awesome. It’s great to see so many of them run up front. It’s great to see some of the Am drivers be comfortable in the car and be able to run towards the front.
“It’s great that we’re catering to all sorts of drivers. We can run up front in Pilot Challenge, we can run up front with two Am drivers in SRO Australia. It’s great.”
