Road America Weekend Notebook

***A total of 26 cars had been entered for this weekend’s seventh and eighth rounds of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America season at Road America, in what will mark the series’ milestone 100th race on Sunday.

***Series competitors and Lamborghini Squadra Corse staff gathered Thursday for a group photo writing out the number 100 in celebration of the achievement (pictured above).

***There have been 93 different class winners since the series’ inception in 2013, with Lime Rock Park having served as the first of 18 different circuits the series has visited in the nine years to date.

***Chris Ward, the senior manager of motorsport for Automobili Lamborghini America, who has been on-site for every practice, qualifying and race since the championship’s start, said the weekend is an “extradorinaiy celebration” for all those who have played a part in the series. 

***Pro class championship leader Richard Antinucci has joined forces with the newly promoted-to-Pro class Dario Capitanio to share driving duties of the No. 22 Dream Racing Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo in the pair of 50-minute races after Antinucci’s car was severely damaged in a multi-car accident in Friday’s second practice session.

***Capitanio, who raced in Pro-Am, was moved to the Pro class prior to the start of the event. Giano Taurino was another driver re-classified, moving from Am to Pro-Am beginning this weekend.

***The pair of practice sessions saw a number of other incidents, including one for the No. 62 Kelly-Moss Road & Race entry of Bill Peluchiwski, which is believed to be done for the weekend after sustaining right-front damage to his Lamborghini. Peluchiwski was making his return after missing the Watkins Glen weekend.

***Other cars to hit trouble in practice included the No. 51 Taurino Racing Lamborghini (Pro-Am) and No. 4 MCR Racing entry (LB Cup).

***ANSA Motorsports is absent with its pair of Lamborghins due to COVID-related issues. Nelson Piquet Jr. and Sergio Jimenez are expected back for the next month’s round at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

***Jordan Missig is back in action this weekend after missing the Watkins Glen weekend due to a racing conflict in the Formula Regional Americas Championship. The Wayne Taylor Racing driver currently sits fifth in the Pro-Am class championship. 

***Sebastian and Rhamses Carazo are the first father-and-son pairing in series’ history. The duo have teamed up in an additional Kelly-Moss Road & Race Lamborghini in the Am class this weekend, with Sebastian starting on pole for Race 1 courtesy of his fastest time in Practice 1.

***The No. 38 TPC Racing entry of Scott Schmidt and Trevor Andrusko is a new chassis after borrowing one of Wayne Taylor Racing’s Lamborghinis for Watkins Glen. A bare chassis arrived at the team’s shop in Jessup, Maryland on July 16, with the team taking three weeks to assemble the car from the ground-up.

“It’s been a challenging few weeks at the TPC Racing shop but the guys have really answered the call,” said Harris Levitas, director of race operations. “The car is together and sound, and though we didn’t get much of a chance to shake it down before it went on the truck we’ll do what we need to do at Road America. This will be another great learning opportunity for Scott and Trevor, coming to the track for the first time.”

***Dream Racing’s Antinucci holds a 14-point lead in the Pro class over Stevan McAleer, who is again sharing the No. 16 Change Racing Lamborghini with Jeroen Mul this weekend. Steven Aghakhani and Jacob Eidson’s win in Race 2 at Watkins Glen have put the O’Gara/US RaceTronics duo within 20 points of the lead.

***Terry Olson is pulling double duty between Super Trofeo and the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the first time, with Olson making his LMP3 series debut with Jr III Racing. 

***Other double-duty drivers include Olson’s co-driver Mark Kvamme, who is in Michelin Pilot Challenge action in CB Motorsports’ new Mercedes-AMG GT4, McAleer also racing in Pilot Challenge in a Notlad by RS1 Aston Martin Vantage GT4 as well as Alan Metni, who is competing in the pair of Porsche Carrera Cup North America presented by The Cayman Islands.

***The 2022 Super Trofeo North America schedule, unveiled Friday evening during IMSA’s ‘State of the Sport’ address, has one to-be-announced date in North America — understood to be a new track to the series — as well as the World Final, with its location for next year yet to be announced by the Italian manufacturer.

***Watch the first Super Trofeo race of the weekend today at 1:40 p.m. ET with live coverage on Lamborghini.com, Trackpass on NBC Sports Gold and IMSA.tv. IMSA Radio’s Brian Till and Jeremey Shaw will provide commentary. Race 2 gets underway Sunday at 11:50 a.m.
