Shanghai Lisheng Racing, the majority shareholder of the new NIO 333 Formula E team, has committed to building an ETCR car with a currently unnamed brand.

The Chinese company hasn’t revealed further details of its program, other than that it will confirm the brand and model of its electric touring car at a later stage.

It is already involved in electric motorsport at a high level, being responsible for the operation of the new-look NIO 333 Formula E team, which it took over last summer through its Brilliance in Excellence affiliate.

Lisheng’s touring car pedigree includes building the MG 6 X-Power TCR on behalf of the Chinese-owned, British-based manufacturer.

The car competed in the TCR China series before finishing fourth in the FIA Motorsport Games Touring Car Cup late last year with Rory Butcher.

“We are still in the very early stages of this project and we will unveil the brand and model of the ETCR car in due course,” confirmed Lisheng chairman Xia Qing.

“At LSR we are all very keen on promoting the ETCR concept that represents the future of motor racing.

“In the wake of the good results achieved by our MG 6 X-Power TCR we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to join ETCR from its very beginning.”

WSC president Marcello Lotti added: “We are delighted to see LSR expanding its commitment in developing a racing cars to ETCR.

“With the MG 6 TCR they have already proved their potential and we can’t wait to see the new ETCR racing car taking to the track for the first test.

“LSR joins the other companies that have already unveiled their projects, while further announcements are due to follow soon.”

Lisheng’s program will be the fourth car built to ETCR regulations, following on from manufacturer programs by Cupra and Hyundai, and Romeo Ferraris’ independent Alfa Romeo Giulia.
