Kyle Marcelli and Danny Formal will be looking to clinch the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Pro class title this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway ahead of November’s season finale in Vallelunga.

The Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport duo, who have been undefeated so far this season, can lock up the drivers’ title three races early by scoring pole and winning Race 1 at The Brickyard.

Marcelli and Formal will be seeking their record-extending ninth and tenth consecutive wins this weekend in the highly competitive single-make series, which has seen a dominant force up front but multiple winners in the three other classes.

“It’s been a great season for us in the No. 1 Lamborghini Super Trofeo, winning eight consecutive races, and a successful season across-the-board for all WTR Andretti cars,” said Marcelli. “Our goal is simply to win the pole and win the races.

“But, a number of cars have shown great speed, and aggression, so we don’t expect it to be easy, it never is.”

This weekend will mark Formal’s racing debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“Kyle and I could clinch the championship in Race 1 with a win and qualifying pole position, so it’s a very important weekend for us.” he said. “Obviously the (win) streak is something that Kyle and I want to continue to have and continue to work on heading to Europe in November.”

A total of five cars are expected to do battle in the Pro class this weekend, including WTR Andretti teammate Ryan Norman, who has come close to breaking Marcelli and Formal’s streak on a number of occasions this season.

Norman sits second in the standings, 44 points behind the No. 1 pairing, who sit on 124 points, with TR3’s Giano Taurino third in the standings, a further four points behind.

A maximum of 32 points are up for grabs in each of the final two events.

“It’s been a while since I’ve raced [at Indianapolis] and it goes back to my Indy Lights days,” said Norman.

“I’m one of the few drivers in the field that’s driven here, and I believe this experience will help up a lot. Lots of opportunities for passing with the long straights and should be some exciting racing.”

A series’ record 42 cars are entered for this weekend’s ninth and tenth rounds of the season, with practice set to kick off on Friday.
