Lamborghini has signed former Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat to its factory LMDh lineup.

Kvyat will be involved in the testing and development of Lamborghini’s Ligier-chassied prototype ahead of a racing program with the official Iron Lynx team next year in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup.

The 28-year-old Russian, who is set to represent Lamborghini under the Italian flag, is already driving for Iron Lynx partner squad Prema in the LMP2 class of the WEC.

He is set to combine that role with “extensive” work on the publicly unnamed Lamborghini LMDh car, which is projected to undertake its first rollout in early summer.

Kvyat spent a total of six seasons racing in Formula 1, driving for Red Bull Racing and its affiliate Scuderia AlphaTauri. His final Grand Prix campaign occurred in 2020 before Alpine hired him as its reserve driver for one year.

“I am very happy to have joined Lamborghini Squadra Corse, it is a great honor for me,” said Kvyat.

“Lamborghini is a very well-known Italian brand with a great history in [the] automotive world and, having grown up in Italy, this is an additional source of pride for me.

“We hope to achieve many goals together, I thank you for your trust in me and I look forward to starting work on the LMDh project later this year.”

Kvyat joins Andrea Caldarelli, Mirko Bortolotti and Romain Grosjean as a member of Lamborghini’s LMDh driving roster.

The manufacturer has not yet announced its driver lineup combinations for next season’s top-level racing programs.

“As a group, we are very excited to welcome Daniil to Lamborghini and believe he will be a strong asset to our LMDh project over the course of the 2023 season,” said Lamborghini’s head of motorsport Giorgio Sanna.

“Daniil’s main role with us will be working closely with our engineers and mechanics on the prototype car which will debut next year and given his vast experience in other racing categories, I have no doubt that he will play a crucial part in us hitting the ground running in 2024.”

As reported by Sportscar365, Lamborghini Iron Lynx is set to field a single LMDh car full-time in next year’s WEC with a second entry being added for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The team’s single-car IMSA GTP program is set to focus on the WeatherTech Championship races at Sebring, Watkins Glen and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, as well as the likely addition of Indianapolis Motor Speedway to the Endurance Cup calendar.
