Honda could be represented on the DTM grid next year following an announcement from the AiM GT team that it plans to enter the German series.

AiM GT has expressed interest in fielding a pair of Honda NSX GT3 Evo22s with one male and one female driver in each car.

It would mark the first full-time Honda entry into the DTM, which has seen an increase in manufacturer diversity since the series adopted GT3 regulations in 2021.

The Japanese marque briefly appeared on the grid in 2019 when a handful of GT500 cars raced in the season finale as part of the Class 1 rules collaboration with Super GT.

AiM GT, which is based in Saxony and run by Frizzi Arnold, Bjorn Friedrich and Klaus Peter Melchiori, the latter formerly of T3 Motorsport, is described as a non-profit team that wants to invest in young talent rather than generating income through paid seats.

This year it has been involved in the Team Piro Sports Toyota program in ADAC GT4 Germany, which forms part of the DTM support package.

“We are very much looking forward to our DTM program next year,” said Arnold.

“The DTM is a very special name worldwide and every motorsport fan knows what is behind the three letters. The fact that we will also be fielding a true rarity in the form of the Honda NSX GT3 makes it even more special.

“One special feature will be our driver lineup. One male and one female driver will drive each of the two cars. We will determine which they will be at our talent scouting sessions this autumn.”

Despite maintaining a consistent North American presence through its Acura brand, Honda has been one of the rarer GT3 manufacturers in European championships.

In addition to AiM GT’s intended DTM venture, Italian team Nova Race this year joined the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Sprint Cup with two NSXs.

There was also a class title in last year’s Michelin Le Mans Cup for Danish outfit GMB Motorsport.
