Kevin Buckler will make his professional return to the wheel in this weekend’s Pirelli GT4 America SprintX race at Sonoma Raceway, as part of a last-minute fourth entry for TRG.
The TRG team owner/driver will join the team’s season-long GT4 Sprint driver Spencer Pumpelly in the No. 68 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR for the pair of 60-minute races, which will also feature two other TRG Porsches in action.
Buckler and Pumpelly will compete in the GT4 Pro-Am class for overall honors, despite running the previous-generation Cayman model.
A trackday event at Sonoma last weekend led to the 60-year-old Californian’s impromptu return to competition in SRO Motorsports America.
“We had such a great time out on the track last weekend and I have said so many times what a kick it would be to drive with Spencer, that when the idea was thrown out there for this weekend I just could not pass it up,” Buckler said.
“I feel we are all so fortunate going into this weekend.
“We get to be out there representing one of the most successful motorsports brands in the world, with some of the best drivers in the sport behind the wheel, and surrounded by our sponsors family and friends cheering us on. I could not ask for anything better.”
Pumpelly heads into the weekend leading the GT4 Sprint points standings, following a victory last time out at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
“This weekend will mark the first time I’ve raced in Sonoma since 2006 so I’m really looking forward to getting back on track there,” he said. “It’s the home of TRG and should be a good track for the Porsche so we have high expectations for sure.”
Buckler said that it’s the “biggest race weekend” of the year for the team, which is based in nearby Petaluma, Calif.
“Not only is Sonoma Raceway our home track, but we have so many of our sponsors, friends and family with us that it just adds to the already super charged atmosphere that always surrounds our paddock,” he said.
“Not to mention that we are fielding four cars with six drivers in two classes for the first time this season. There are also some very high hopes and expectations with all of our drivers going into the weekend in really strong positions.”
